ROMANIA

THE UNSEEN CARPATHIANS

A DIFFERENT SIDE OF EUROPE, REVEALED BY THE ROAD.

Romania remains one of Europe’s least explored driving destinations. Beyond familiar legends lies a land shaped by mountains, forests, medieval towns, and roads that still belong to the landscape rather than tourism. The Carpathians carve through the heart of the country, connecting Saxon villages, fortified citadels, alpine passes, and deep wilderness.

This expedition is about discovering Europe before it was softened.

Unhurried roads, dramatic scenery, and places that reward those who take the long way around. Embarq’s Romania expedition is designed for explorers who value the journey as much as the destination, where the drive itself becomes the experience.

Itinerary

Day 1 ARRIVE IN BUCHAREST

Arrive in Romania’s capital and ease into the journey. The day is kept light and flexible, allowing time to rest after travel or take a walk through the historic streets and cafés of the city.

Day 2 BUCHAREST TO SIBIU - 264 KM

Via the Transfăgărășan Highway

Leaving the city behind, you head north towards one of Europe’s most iconic mountain roads. The Transfăgărășan climbs steadily into the Făgăraș Mountains, revealing sweeping curves, tunnels, and panoramic viewpoints. A relaxed picnic near the alpine section sets the pace before descending into Transylvania and reaching Sibiu by evening. A day defined entirely by the road.

Day 3 Inverness to John O’ Groats

Transylvania’s Quiet Countryside

The drive takes you deeper into rural Transylvania, where rolling fields and forests replace city life. Near the village of Cund, the day introduces a local experience rooted in the landscape, followed by a hands-on culinary session using regional ingredients. The afternoon is intentionally slow, offering time to absorb the stillness of the surroundings.

Day 4 SIGHIȘOARA AND THE TRANSYLVANIAN HILLS (CUND) - 76 KM

You arrive at Sighișoara, one of Europe’s best-preserved medieval citadels, where cobbled streets and fortified walls tell stories of centuries past. Later, the experience shifts beyond the town as you explore the surrounding countryside on e-bikes, moving through villages, meadows, and open hills at an unhurried pace.

Day 5 CUND TO BRAȘOV Via VISCRI - 155 KM

Driving through Saxon Transylvania, you stop at Viscri, a UNESCO-listed village known for its fortified church and timeless rural character. Simple homes, uneven streets, and open landscapes offer a glimpse into a way of life that has endured for generations. By evening, you reach Brașov, set against forested hills and medieval squares.

Day 6 BRAȘOV AND BRAN - 30 KM

Today brings a change in terrain. You leave paved roads behind for a guided off-road experience through forest tracks and elevated clearings, reaching viewpoints rarely accessed by conventional vehicles. As evening approaches, you visit Bran after hours, experiencing the site in a quieter and more atmospheric setting before continuing into the mountains.

Day 7 SINAIA AND THE WILD

The morning is dedicated to Romania’s royal history with a visit to Peleș Castle, set against a dramatic mountain backdrop. Later, the focus turns to nature with a guided wildlife observation experience from a forest hide, following strict ethical and safety practices. A day shaped by history, landscape, and silence.

Day 8 RETURN TO BUCHAREST - 140 KM

Via SLĂNIC PRAHOVA

Leaving the mountains behind, you drive south to one of Romania’s most striking natural spaces, an expansive underground salt mine with a scale unlike anything seen above ground. From here, the road leads back to Bucharest for a relaxed final evening.

Day 9 DEPARTURE

After breakfast, transfer to the airport and depart with memories of a lesser-known Europe discovered at driving pace.

I have signed up for this expedition to test my endurance and
explore India's diverse landscapes. Most of all excited to embark on
this journey of self discovery.
